An Unnecessary Study in Grief

Sherlock is only doing what’s necessary to keep John safe. John is doing what’s necessary to keep going.

Following the events at St Bartholomew’s, John struggles to resume normalcy without the influential factor of Sherlock Holmes on his life. He becomes solitary, angry, and determined not to loose the faint remainders of Sherlock in his possession. As John attempts to take on cases to honor Sherlock and keep away the demons of his solitude (there are references to depressive and suicidal thoughts which might be distressing to some readers), Sherlock takes on his own agenda to dismantle the web of crime built by Moriarty.

Despite their individual efforts to protect each other circumstances arise which cause their reunion, wounded and weary, in a hospital bed. John’s resulting trauma as a result of Sherlock’s death is heartbreaking and solemnly plausible. Accepting his loyalty-cum-adoration for Sherlock leads John to a dark place. Similarly, Sherlock is forced to grow accustomed to the consequences of his actions and reevaluation of his moral foundation. After enduring such trials John and Sherlock reunite in a culmination of frantic relief.

I greatly enjoyed the vulnerability of John’s emotional state, the brotherly alliance between Sherlock and Mycroft, the incredible reunion scene, and the preserved integrity of minor characters in this piece. Great care also seems to have been taken in the explicit scenes between John and Sherlock, leaning heavily on the emotional intimacy. Other than infrequent speech or mannerisms which seemed out of character (one such example is Sherlock’s hand gesture toward John in the hospital) and formatting inconsistencies, I was incredibly impressed by the interpretation of events post-Reichenbach. The Adventure of the Rainbow Flutter

John’s gay, American secret comes to town. Sherlock only pretends to find it dull.

Don’t let the title fool you into thinking this isn’t something you would be interested in. It’s not crack, it’s case. My first way to describe this is “something a little different”. I expected to find a gay bar fic (which, don’t get me wrong, that is a trope I enj0y), but this was not any sort of typical. John opens the door to find an old fling, but Sean is not there to see him. He needs Sherlock, and what he needs him for leads John and Sherlock to the football field and the poker tables. It’s a short fic but it accomplishes quite a lot, establishing a case that is not too hard to follow, believable backstories, and a smooth transition from friends to a little bit more. I am going to give major props to the author for doing what I think are awesome deductions. It’s always hard to write Sherlock’s observations but furthermore the reasons for the observations, and this fic has those. Basically, this is a very well-rounded fic; an interesting case, realistic progression, and it all starts with a drag queen. MATURE READERS ONLY.

Transfusion

But at those moments, with Sherlock pressed against his body, arms wrapped around John, John’s hand in Sherlock’s hair, the feeling of Sherlock’s mouth against John’s bare flesh, John could know Sherlock was back, could ground himself in his presence in a way that helped banish his lingering nightmares.

Looking for a little vampy Sherlock to whet your appetite? Look no further. It’s a short one, but a good one, managing to encompass some fairly complex emotions within a few sentences. This fic, unlike most, doesn’t go into too much detail on the how or the technical aspects of Sherlock’s being a vampire. It’s more a fic focused on John, after the Reichenbach return and willing to give his flatmate anything, including his blood, to just have the security that Sherlock is really there. There is a lovely scene in which Sherlock rules out other feeding sources, but what really makes it for me is one of the last few lines, in which Sherlock describes what John tastes like and it is entirely Sherlock. It shouldn’t be one of the sexiest things I’ve ever read, but it is. There is a second chapter, and while the author honestly could have stopped at one, there was a clear desire to give readers a bit of smutty goodness. MATURE READERS ONLY.

The Harbour Becomes the Sea

“I can’t,” John breathes again, pained because he does so want to taste Sherlock. To be this close and come away with nothing will be a tragedy.

There are many adjectives that could be used to describe this fic: tender, sexy, hot, sweet, salacious etc. But the adjective that I keep wanting to use is “heavy”. The fic begins and there is just a weight on the entire encounter. It’s a precursor, almost, to the weight of what John and Sherlock are about to do, to cross the line from flatmates to so much more in the form of humanity’s favorite pastime. The fic is more of an artistic piece, trying to accurately describe the emotions and thought processes of the exchange, more so of John’s workings and his appreciation of Sherlock deepening. It’s very sweet and delicate and just all around artistically accomplished. MATURE READERS ONLY.

Sometimes When We Touch

John might be touching Sherlock a little more often than is strictly necessary. Sherlock probably hasn’t even noticed. Right…?

Don’t let the super cheesy title make you think this is just super cheesy. Well, it is a little, but in the best way. Set after Sherlock’s return, the ball gets set in motion when Sherlock finally calls John out on his recent obsession with touching Sherlock. A single sentence and John and Sherlock are faced with the reality that they aren’t quite better yet and start the path to getting there. The tension between them is almost able to be felt by the reader. It’s a bit more realistic in pointing out that, even after the initial conversations, there will still be things that leave their mark. The reason this fic deserves a read is primarily the voice. The author writes a great John, sometimes giving way to a more, dare I say, cheesy line of thought. The “crouching panther” comment is the best example of this. I must say, however, the epilogue is (in my opinion) an accurate summary of what Sherlock would truly be like when promised something of that nature. A very nice read and an excellent use of the internal monologue. MATURE READERS ONLY.

The Queen’s Guard

In the caves of Afghanistan, John died once already. But in a world ruled by creatures more terrible than divine, death isn’t always permanent, and when a half-human stranger stumbles into his life, John has to decide what he hates more: the Royal bloodline, or that peculiar heart which won’t let him die…

Now this fic is something tricky; on one hand it’s beautifully written, on the other I’m not exactly sure what just happened. This fic is a crossover with Neil Gaiman’s A Study In Emerald, which I haven’t read. I think it is very important for you to have some background knowledge of that story because I honestly don’t know what is going on. In defense of this fic, I am intrigued rather than frustrated by this. I want to learn more about this universe and figure out exactly what the world is like. This story is written so well, very rich with visuals and subtle emotion. The real kicker in the writing is body language clues, I won’t spoil anything but I can’t believe I didn’t see what is so clearly presented to the reader. It’s a wonderfully written piece and to those who know the source material you’ll love it, but it will alienate readers who haven’t read the story it’s crossed with, which is a shame.

Blatant Misuse Of The Little Grey Cells

There’s been a crime, Sherlock reveals all.

This is a fun little thing! There’s been a crime in London and Sherlock brings the whole crew together to find the culprit! It’s just a silly little piece that made me smile and giggle. I think it’s fairly obvious that none of this would actually happen, and Sherlock’s dramatics are a bit exaggerated but it made this thing even sweeter for me. It was just really fun, a few gems of fandom references and poking fun at Anderson, what else is there to life? This author is amazing and the way that she can write a total crack story in a way that doesn’t sound stupid is awesome! This was fun, a perfect story if you just want something quick and silly. :)

All Things Inherit

For John, it’s not a bullet that throws his existence into disarray - it’s a bite

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted a review, but I just read this fic and I have to share, so here I am! I don’t know if anyone remembers, but I have a thing for AUs and magical realism, and this fic does a fantastic job taking werewolf mythology and presenting it in a new and interesting way that fits into the world it’s from. The author does a fantastic job explaining everything you need to know without being vague or hitting you over the head with pieces of information you don’t need; the result is an extremely engaging story that I could not stop reading. I really appreciated that we got to learn things with John, and I genuinely felt his excitement and confusion along the way. John’s characterization was spot-on, and I loved Sherlock in this - his ‘mastery’ of the situation combined with his complete clueless-ness about how his actions would affect John was just perfect! Their relationship progressed wonderfully too, and the author was really conscious of keeping it natural and in character. I never felt pulled out of the story because everything was so well explained and examined. Plus this fic gave me shapeshifting, telepathy, and emotional wump; what’s not to love?!

Lost for Words

Sherlock is assaulted by an unknown assailant while John is away at a medical conference, leaving him with a severe brain injury. While his intellect and personality are intact, he’s lost the use of his right-side limbs and his ability to speak freely. John suddenly finds himself as the main source of support, and possibly a caregiver, to a flatmate who is struggling to do the things he loves most. And Sherlock Holmes has never been the best of patients.

I read this one quite a long time ago actually so I’m sorry that I won’t be able to pull out specific details as much as I usually do. I really liked this one though, liked it enough to remember a good portion of it months later which is something I can’t say for most fics. I’m really into stories where Sherlock gets involved in some kind of accident and is left with a disability, I don’t know what that says about me but I find the rehab process fascinating. The medical aspects I’m guessing aren’t 100% correct but I’m no doctor either so it didn’t affect my reading. Sherlock is fairly on character, he’s just suffered an accident that’s left his speech in scrambles and I think he acts accordingly. The disability is handled very well too, he’s not a child he just can’t get the words out right. I like that this story didn’t make him out to be weak, just sometimes very stubborn. John was written well too, trying to keep everything carrying on but not exactly sure what to do. I thought his characterization was handled very well. Mummy Holmes makes an appearance, and got a bit tropey, but was all in all an alright character. Overall a pretty well done story, the writing gets a little clumsy in spots but nothing major. I do like the ending as well, there is no magical cure in life and this story doesn’t get one either. Good job!

A Study in Reverse

“Cocaine or heroin?”

“Sorry?”

“Which was it: cocaine or herion?”

I am shamelessly going to review this fic because it is a brief one-shot based of the three sentence ficlet I wrote (seen above) in which John is the genius doctor and Sherlock is the regular detective. The author took it and ran with it. The writing in here is a bit unique. Written in first person is usually a not so good thing, especially for Sherlock. But seeing as Sherlock is not the rude genius we know him as, it’s acceptable. It also adds a different voice for him, one that manages to capture Sherlock  without his air of haughtiness that comes with the science of deduction. It’s almost meticulous insight into what John was thinking when Sherlock dressed him down, but (if you’ll pardon the redundancy) in reverse; John looking at Sherlock and reading everything about him. There’s a little back story on how Sherlock got to be in St. Bart’s before and now, but I truly do think the fic is unique in that you can tell the author watched the original exchange very carefully and assessed each expression to apply it here. So, yes, I am shamelessly going to share the fic based on my ficlet but I think it’s worth looking at regardless of origin.
